Recommended Story Types
he 2025 Africa College Film Competition encourages participants to use creative storytelling formats to explore this year’s theme: “Empowering Africa: Education and Technology for a Sustainable Future.” By offering diverse story types, the competition allows students to choose the format that best represents their vision and creativity while aligning with the competition’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and African narratives.
From factual explorations to emotionally-driven narratives, these formats aim to inspire, educate, and celebrate Africa's unique potential for growth and transformation through technology and education. Whether through the lens of a camera capturing real-life stories or a dramatized journey of innovation, participants are invited to tell powerful stories that resonate deeply with audiences.
- Documentary
- Why: Documentaries are ideal for exploring real-life examples of how technology and education are driving sustainability. Participants can highlight innovations, communities, or individuals making an impact.
- Examples:
- A village using solar-powered learning tools.
- Students in remote areas gaining access to online education.
- How traditional knowledge integrates with modern practices.
- Feature Story
- Why: A feature story allows participants to craft in-depth narratives that combine storytelling and factual reporting. This could involve interviews, real-life case studies, and visuals that resonate with audiences.
- Examples:
- The journey of a teacher using technology to revolutionize education.
- A startup developing eco-friendly tech for African schools.
- Drama
- Why: Drama is a powerful way to evoke emotion and connect audiences with the theme. Fictionalized narratives can humanize complex topics and inspire action.
- Examples:
- A young inventor creating a tech solution to solve a local education problem.
- A family adapting to new sustainable practices through technology.
- Experimental/Artistic Story
- Why: This format suits participants who want to explore the theme creatively, using visuals, sound, and unconventional techniques. It allows for abstract storytelling that symbolizes the blending of tradition, technology, and sustainability.
- Examples:
- A symbolic representation of traditional African practices evolving with technology.
- An artistic visualization of education’s role in shaping a sustainable future.
- Hybrid Format (Docu-Drama)
- Why: Combines the emotional engagement of drama with the factual depth of a documentary. Participants can dramatize real events or blend interviews with fictional storytelling to present their vision.
- Examples:
- A dramatized account of a real-life sustainability project in Africa.
- Blending interviews with students or teachers alongside a fictional narrative.
